Analysis

During the flare and touchdown, the pilot encountered gusty crosswinds. The airplane departed the right side of the runway and struck a parked Cessna 172, causing minor damage. The reported winds at the time of the accident were from 260 degrees at 12 knots, with gusts to 25 knots.

Factual Information

On February 24, 1996, about 1830 eastern standard time, a Cessna 172M, N12219, registered to Horizon Flyers Inc., Enfield, Connecticut, collided with a parked airplane during the landing roll at the Skylark Airpark, Warehouse Point, Connecticut, while on a 14 CFR Part 91 flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was filed. The airplane was substantially damaged. The parked airplane received minor damage. The private pilot was not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed. The flight originated from Westfield, Massachusetts, about 1615. The flight had landed on runway 28, then departed the right side of the runway into the grass, adjacent to the runway and parking ramp. The pilot attempted to return to the runway; however, the wing tip of his airplane struck the propeller blade of a parked Cessna 172, N6054R. At the time, the pilot did not realize he had struck the other airplane, and did not initially report the accident. The pilot stated: ...making a normal landing approach into a direct cross wind...at touch down, I experienced an extreme gust of wind which lifted my aircraft and carried it off the runway. At this point the aircraft struck a parked aircraft. The reported winds at the time of the accident were from 260 degrees at 12 knots with gusts to 25 knots.

Probable Cause and Findings

the pilot's inadequate compensation for the crosswind and gusts. The wind conditions were factors.
