Analysis

The pilot took off from runway 16 and the engine lost partial engine power on initial climb. The pilot decided to return to the airport and stalled the airplane during the turn. The airplane subsequently collided with trees and then the ground off the departure end of the runway. Examination of the wreckage revealed that the airplane collided with the ground in a nose-low attitude. The airplane was destroyed. A post-accident teardown examination of the engine revealed that an exhaust valve was stuck in the open position.

Factual Information

On October 29, 1999, at 1435 central daylight time, a Cessna 150F, N6444F, lost power and collided with trees on the departure end of runway 16 at Bay Springs, Mississippi. The personal flight was conducted by the private pilot under the provisions of Title 14 CFR Part 91, and visual flight rules. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident and no flight plan was filed for the local flight. The airplane was destroyed and the private pilot received minor injuries. The flight departed Bay Springs, Mississippi, at 1430. According to the FAA, the pilot took off from runway 16 and experienced a partial loss of engine power on initial climb. The pilot decided to return to the airport and reportedly stalled the airplane during the turn. The airplane subsequently collided with trees and the ground off the departure end of runway 16. Probable Cause and Findings

The pilot's failure to maintain flying speed that resulted in a loss of control and stall. A factor was a stuck exhaust valve.
