Analysis

The private pilot reported that he was landing in an open pasture near his home. He reported that he landed long in an effort to clear a series of power lines located on the approach path to the landing area. He reported that during the landing rollout, shortly before reaching the end of the intended landing area, he applied wheel brakes and the airplane nosed over onto its back. The pilot reported that he hadn't experienced any mechanical difficulties or malfunctions with the airplane that contributed to the accident.

Factual Information

On September 28, 2002, about 1500 mountain daylight time, a Piper/Cub Crafters PA-18, N380CC, sustained substantial damage subsequent to a nose over while landing at an off-airport landing site near Gannett, Idaho. The airplane is owned by the pilot, and was being operated as a personal flight under the provisions of Title 14, CFR part 91, when the accident occurred. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed for the local flight. The private pilot, the sole occupant of the airplane, received minor injuries. There was no fire and no report of ELT activation. In a written report dated September 28, 2002, the pilot reported that he was landing in an open pasture near his home.
