Analysis

The airplane collided with a fence during an aborted takeoff on a 2,941 foot-long runway. The pilot stated that the airplane slowly increased speed after full power was applied. The pilot reported that the airplane was airborne for a few seconds before he decided to abort the takeoff. He decreased power to idle and attempted to bring the airplane to a full-stop, but was unsuccessful. The pilot reported that he should have waited until it was cooler outside, and applied flaps on takeoff in order to prevent this accident. The density altitude at an airport located 10 miles to the west of the accident site was approximately 2,565 feet mean sea level.

Factual Information

On June 29, 2003, about 1700 eastern standard time, a Piper PA-28-161, N1660H, collided with a fence during an aborted takeoff on runway 27 (2,941 feet by 40 feet, asphalt) at the Brazil Clay County Airport, Brazil, Indiana. The pilot and the three passengers on board were not injured. The airplane was substantially damaged. The 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight was operating in visual meteorological conditions without a flight plan. The flight was originating at the time of the accident with an intended destination of the Evansville Regional Airport (EVV), Evansville, Indiana. The pilot stated that the airplane slowly increased speed during the takeoff roll after full power was applied. The pilot reported that the airplane was airborne for a few seconds when he decided to abort the takeoff. The pilot stated that he decreased power to idle and attempted to bring the airplane to a full-stop; however, the airplane continued rolling until it impacted a fence at the end of the runway. The pilot reported that he should have waited until it was cooler outside, and applied flaps on takeoff in order to prevent this accident. The density altitude at Terre Haute International Airport-Hulman Field (HUF), Terre Haute, Indiana, located 10 miles to the west of the accident site, at 1653 was approximately 2,565 feet mean sea level. The field elevation at HUF is 589 feet.

Probable Cause and Findings

The delayed aborted takeoff by the pilot-in-command. A contributing factor was the fence, which the airplane contacted during the aborted takeoff.
