Aircraft #1

N2094K

Luscombe 8A

Analysis

After touching down and applying brakes the airplane skipped on a small rise. The airplane touched down a second time, however, the brakes had locked the wheels causing the airplane to flip over. No preexisting engine or airframe anomalies were noted prior to or during the flight.

Factual Information

On August 7, 2005, at approximately 1215 Pacific daylight time, a Luscombe 8A single-engine airplane, N2094K, sustained substantial damage following a loss of control and nosing over after landing near Otis Orchards, Washington. The airplane was registered to and operated by a private individual. The certificated private pilot, sole occupant of the aircraft, was not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the personal cross-country flight, which was being operated in accordance with 14 CFR Part 91, and a flight plan was not filed. The flight had departed the Three Forks Airport, Three Forks, Montana, at 0800 mountain daylight time. According to the Pilot/Operator Aircraft Accident Report (NTSB Form 6120.1/2), and in a telephone interview with the NTSB investigator-in-charge, the pilot reported that as he crossed over the fence and touched down on the runway, he began to apply brakes. The pilot stated that this was followed by the airplane "skipping" on a small rise on the runway, and as the airplane touched down a second time the brakes had locked the wheels and the airplane flipped over. The pilot reported that there were no preexisting engine or airframe anomalies noted prior to or during the flight which would have precluded normal operations.

Probable Cause and Findings

The pilot's loss of directional control as a result of excessive braking while landing, which resulted in the nose over.
