Analysis

The airplane nosed over during landing on a private, dirt agricultural airstrip. The pilot said that during the wheel landing, he applied excessive brake pressure and the airplane nosed over. The pilot indicated that there were no mechanical malfunctions with the airplane.

Factual Information

On January 12, 2007, at 1145 mountain standard time, a Piper PA 18-150, N518GM, nosed over during landing at a private agricultural airstrip 3 miles east of Maricopa, Arizona. The pilot, who was also the registered owner of the airplane, was operating it under the provisions of 14 CFR Part 91. The private pilot and one passenger were not injured; the airplane sustained substantial damage. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed. The pilot departed from Chandler Municipal Airport, Chandler, Arizona, at 1135 and was landing at his destination when the accident occurred. In a written statement, the pilot stated that he and his passenger set up for landing on a private, dirt agricultural airstrip that was approximately 2,000 feet in length. After performing a wheel landing, the pilot applied excessive brake pressure and the airplane nosed over. The pilot stated that there were no mechanical malfunctions.

Probable Cause and Findings

The excessive brake application during landing which resulted in a nose over.
