Analysis

The student pilot reported that he landed fast and long, touching down about halfway down the 2,000-foot-long grass runway. The airplane's brakes were ineffective on the dew-covered grass, so the pilot initiated a go-around. The landing gear contacted a three-foot-high wire fence at the end of the runway. The airplane continued to travel about another 40 feet, at which time the right horizontal stabilizer and right main gear struck a fence post before the airplane impacted the ground. The pilot reported there were no mechanical failures or malfunctions of the airplane prior to the accident.

Factual Information

On July 5, 2011, at 0800 eastern daylight time, a Maule MXT-7-180A, N800NH, operated by a student pilot, collided with a fence while performing an aborted landing at the Barnhardt Memorial Airport (3OH0), New Carlisle, Ohio. The pilot was not injured and the airplane sustained substantial damage to the horizontal stabilizer and fuselage. The 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight was being operating in visual meteorological conditions without a flight plan. The last departure for the airplane was from the Moraine Airpark (I73), Dayton, Ohio. The pilot reported he landed fast and long, touching down about half way down the 2,000 foot long grass runway. The airplane's brakes were ineffective on the dew covered grass, so the pilot initiated an aborted landing. The landing gear contacted a three foot high wire fence at the end of the runway.
