GOODSELL LYNN A CLASSIC 4

Analysis

The pilot reported that, he flew low over a pasture to look it over for a landing site. He then began a climb to circle around to make the landing but did not clear a set of powerline wires. The landing gear contacted the top wire which led to the airplane descending vertically to the terrain. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the right wing. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

Probable Cause and Findings

The pilot’s failure to maintain clearance from powerlines while maneuvering for landing, which resulted in a wire strike and impact with terrain.
